Zach Braffs Blog

heres what he has to tell us about scrubs

Dear Friends,I am sorry it has taken me so long to write, but I feel kindo silly posting without anything too interesting to say. I've also been stalling to talk about some big Scrubs news, however I've just been informed that I'm not allowed to talk about anything related to Scrubs and it's current fate. What I can tell you is that we are currently shooting 18 episodes for the 8th season. I am not allowed to discuss where one might watch them. (More news to come.)But I can tell you that the coolest episode we've ever done is going to air on May 8th at 8:30(E/P). I directed it and it's a GIANT homage to "The Princess Bride". Dr. Cox has to make up a fairy tale for his son and he does so using everything that happened in the hospital that day. It's by far the most epic (and expensive) episode we've ever done. (Monsters, potions, evil wizards, giants, hunchbacks, gnomes – like "World of Warcraft", but Scrubs…)I'll be posting an exclusive clip on this site in a few days.

Scrubs: Outta here like Vladimir

"Thanks for everything, Ted. Sincerely."
God, I'm going to miss Ken Jenkins -- who's been the "Scrubs" MVP for the last two seasons -- if, in fact, he's leaving the show.
I understand why Bill Lawrence wants to do a bonus final-final season on ABC next year. NBC wouldn't let him make the handful of episodes he needed to send the show off properly, and it wouldn't make fiscal sense for ABC to pick the show up for a half-dozen episodes or less. But episodes like "My Dumb Luck" -- funny and touching and classic "Scrubs"-ian though it was -- concern me, because now certain characters are getting their closure well ahead of schedule.
I imagine Jenkins will stick around with the show in some capacity -- Kelso could become a private practice doc based in the hospital (ala Elliot), or a member of the board (ala Jordan), or a pharmaceutical rep (ala Heather Locklear), to name just three possibilities -- and if Cox gets the chief of medicine job, there could be some entertaining role reversal in Cox having to make the unpopular decisions while Kelso needles him about it.
But part of what made this episode so good -- and what's made the last few so good after nearly two years of very uninspiring "Scrubs" -- was that knowledge that the end was in sight, and that the writers could pull out all the stops and give Kelso a proper farewell (from his job, if not from the series).
This reminds me of the last two years of "The Sopranos." Season 6 (or 6A, if you want; the one with the Kevin Finnerty experience) started off like gangbusters, because the writers at the time assumed this would be the last year. About halfway through the writing process, David Chase agreed to do one final batch of episodes, and they had to put the brakes on a whole lot of storylines. (That's why Vito's gay awakening got so much play, for instance.)
If "Scrubs" can be as good as it's been for the last few episodes for another year, then I have no problem getting another season out of the show. But if it's been this good of late solely because the finish line was in sight, then I worry about how much of the ABC season is going to feel like filler.
Oh, and was I the only one driven batty by every character mispronouncing Porphyria? It's poor-FEAR-ee-uh, not poor-fur-EE-uh.

NBC plans low-key exit for ABC-bound 'Scrubs'

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Like a tipsy party guest, it's going to be pretty tough for "Scrubs" to exit NBC gracefully.
The network's final "Scrubs" episode airs next week, concluding its run with the network after seven seasons. But you'd never know it from watching NBC or perusing the entertainment media.
At the conclusion of what was the comedy's third-to-last episode on NBC Thursday, viewers were simply urged to check out the show's interactive features on NBC.com. The usual array of creator and cast interviews that usually accompany the final episodes of a concluding series are likewise largely absent.
The super low-key exit for "Scrubs" is tied to what's become the worst-kept secret in Hollywood: that the veteran comedy is moving to ABC. The long-pending deal for ABC to pick up 18 episodes of "Scrubs" for next season is effectively, pretty much, essentially, done.
Production has been under way for weeks, while cast and crew have been encouraged to keep quiet. A television studio producing a drama costing north of $1 million per episode without anybody saying who the episodes are for is considered highly unusual, if not a little weird.
ABC plans to confirm the acquisition at next month's "upfront" presentation to advertisers.
Holding series pickup news until the upfronts is a typical network strategy. In the case of "Scrubs," ABC also is waiting for the show to end its NBC run. NBC came out swinging when news of the series' move to ABC first leaked, accusing the show's producer ABC Studios of violating NBC's right of first negotiation. The parties have since patched things up, but a premature celebration by ABC could inflame the situation.
That leaves NBC in the similarly odd position of promoting a farewell to a longtime series that's headed across the dial.A network spokesperson said NBC will run promos for the final "Scrubs" episode and gamely bill it as "a season finale" rather than "a series finale." Back in 2001, WB Network called its last episode of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" the "WB series finale" rather than acknowledge the show had scored a second life on UPN.
In an interesting twist, "Scrubs"' stock has shown some life on NBC recently.
When paired with NBC's hit "The Office" since the conclusion of the Hollywood writers strike, the medical comedy has outperformed its average last year by 17% among adults 18-49, a demographic coveted by advertisers. But the show's real test will come when it moves to ABC, where it will likely have to help jump start a freshman comedy.

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "Scrubs" actress Judy Reyes will star in the fact-based drama "Little Girl Lost: The Delimar Vera Story," which will air on Lifetime Movie Network this year.
Reyes will play Luz Cuevas, who believed that her infant daughter, Delimar, had perished in a fire in their Philadelphia apartment. But six years later, Luz spots a little girl at a birthday party who she knows in her heart is her daughter and sets out to prove it.
Ana Ortiz (Hilda on "Ugly Betty") will play Luz's distant relative. A. Martinez, known for his role as Roy on ABC's "General Hospital," will play a councilman who helps Luz.

Scrubs actress chuckling all the way to work

Judy Reyes (Carla)Was Interviewed and confirmed theres going to be season 8 for sure

Last year NBC announced the seventh season, which was then in production, would be the last. But recent reports confirm the series will see an eighth season and move to rival network ABC.
Depending on how the show fares on the new channel, and how much promotion and support the new network is willing to give it, the switch could see Scrubs continue well into the future.
"In this business, we're well aware that it's a one season at a time deal," says Reyes of the future of the show. "I think I see it as just one more season."
While the writers' strike has been causing headaches for programmers everywhere, it was thanks to the strike that fans will get an extra season of Scrubs.
"We were winding down and committed to doing our final season. We were ready to end it," says Reyes.
"It was like senior year in high school. You don't want to not see your best friends but you are so ready to go to college. But then we got cut short by this weird but necessary strike that went on longer than it needed to."
Though Reyes believes the strike was "botched and exploited and taken advantage of" by both the studio and the writers' guild, supporting the writers was important to the actress, who joined the picket line along with her fellow cast-members.
"It's naive to think that without the writers you would exist at the end of the day. You have to support the people who put the words in your mouth."
By the time the strike was settled, ABC had agreed to pick the series up for another season and cast and crew got back into the swing of things.
Reyes isn't quite sure what is happening with the negotiations or where things stand, as she and the cast try to steer clear of the business side of things.
"They try to keep us out of that process as much as possible until it's done. Only because it's inevitable that it's going to affect the vibe on set.
"It's only when it starts to affect us directly that we're going to be involved."
Until then, it's business as usual on set. Which generally entails the cast mocking each other ruthlessly and trying to spoil each other's scenes.
"If Donald and Zach are giving each other the same old crap they've been giving each other and cracking us up into ruining takes, that's the reason to do it each day."

New Ask Ausiello

Question: What do you know about the upcoming episode of Scrubs titled "My Princess?" — Nadav
Ausiello: I know that it's the last original episode of Scrubs to air on NBC ever, it was a crapload of work, and Bill Lawrence doesn't really care if no one likes it. "Even now, after seven years, we try to do one show that we spend way too much money and time on in the hopes that people… actually, you know what? We're ultimately just making ourselves happy," Bill confesses. "It's like last year when we did the musical. Some of the response was like, "Who gives a s--t?" But we were happy. Same thing when we did the live-action sitcom. And this year, partly because my wife always jokes that I haven't written an episode of Scrubs that my kids can watch, and partly because one of our favorite family movies is The Princess Bride, we did a huge homage to The Princess Bride. Zach directed it like a major feature; we blew our entire season's budget on it. There are horse chases and castles…. Janitor is a giant, Elliot is a princess, Dr. Cox is a knight. It's crazy and silly for a seventh-year show to be trying this stuff, but, man, I'm really proud of it." BTW, there's still no official (tee-hee) news about Scrubs moving to ABC next season.

Sarah Chalke Returns to 'Mother' While 'Scrubs' Moves

It's getting hard to keep track of where you might find Scrubs actress Sarah Chalke on television these days. The NBC comedy disappeared for over four months due to the writers' strike, then finally returned earlier this month to Thursdays at 9:30pm following The Office. Now the network has announced that they'll be moving the remaining episodes of the series to 8:30pm, swapping the show with 30 Rock for the remainder of the season. However, even if you can't remember when Scrubs is on, you'll still be able to catch Chalke on How I Met Your Mother. It was announced today that the actress will be returning to the CBS comedy after making her first appearance in the infamous Britney Spears episode

When Shows Jump Networks, Viewers Win

When Shows Jump Networks, Viewers Win
NBC Universal lost another show to a competing network this year, as well. Scrubs will air its eighth season on ABC next fall. ABC, by the way, can almost be forgiven for greenlighting the abomination known as Cavemen. With the acquisition of Scrubs, they're gathering an impressive slate of clever comedies, including Samantha Who? and Miss/Guided which reminds me of nothing more than Scrubs set in a high school instead of a hospital.

Where Things Stand

It's aliiive!
That's what you need to know about the NBC, er, make that ABC fan favorite Scrubs. Despite the panic following Ben Silverman's announcement on Wednesday that Scrubs would not be a part of the Peacock Net's 2008-09 lineup and that Scrubs had "finished its run on NBC," sources on the set of Sacred Heart gave me the nitty-gritty on where things stand—some of which you may or may not have heard. Here's the juice:
NBC will air six more new episodes of Scrubs this season, beginning this Thursday, April 10. (Woo!) The cast finished shooting episode "712" (the 12th episode of season seven) on Monday, which is the last episode that will be shown on NBC. However! The production train keeps on chugging.
According to sources on set, Scrubs began shooting an episode on Tuesday that is being numbered as "713/800." (Meaning, it is the 13th episode in production this season but is scheduled to air in season eight.) The cast and crew will shoot through August and are expected to end on episode 816.
Those episodes—yes, 16 of them by my count—are slated to air on ABC.
Word is the budget has been trimmed somewhat substantially in order to have the show continue, so it is possible there might be a few lower-level cast changes, but that remains to be seen. Zach Braff is most definitely on board.
Regardless, the good news is that although ABC declined to comment and says no announcement regarding Scrubs will come anytime soon, it seems that Bill Lawrence may know a thing or two about what his good friend (and former Scrubs colleague) Steve McPherson is thinking, since he's already started to shoot episodes that are headed for ABC.
And so, Scrubs seems to be very much alive and kicking. And if it turns out to be "alive" in that Brendan-Fraser-is-really-dead-and-we're-just-messing-with-you kinda way, let me be the first to say: Steve McPherson, I'm coming for you.

UP NEXT For Scrubs: ''A major character is sent packing,'' hints exec producer Bill Lawrence. Meanwhile, Dr. Cox (John C. McGinley) moves up in his career, and the Janitor (Neil Flynn) continues to date Lady (yes, a real woman!). Also, brace thyself for an ambitious fairy-tale homage to The Princess Bride directed by Zach Braff, whose J.D. plays the village idiot. ''It's an entire episode as told by Dr. Cox to his kid as a bedtime story,'' says Lawrence. ''We did it partly because it's a cool story and partly because my wife(Christa Miller, Jordan) was giving me s--- that I haven't written an episode of the show that my kids could watch.''
